Demand drafts are one of the few payment instruments where neither side has to worry about the money not showing up. No bouncing, no failed transactions, no chasing the other party. That reliability is exactly why banks, courts, colleges, and government offices still ask for them.
Before you walk into an SBI branch, though, it helps to know what the DD will actually cost you. The fee is not flat. it depends on the draft amount, and there are meaningful differences between the slabs.
Here is everything you need to know about SBI DD charges in 2026, including issuance fees, cancellation charges, revalidation costs, and the accounts that get DDs for free.
SBI charges for demand drafts on a slab basis. The larger the draft, the higher the fee though above Rs. 1 lakh, the per-unit rate actually drops (Rs. 4 per Rs. 1,000 instead of Rs. 5). All charges listed below are inclusive of GST.
Demand Draft Amount
Issuance Charge
Up to Rs. 5,000
Rs. 25 (inclusive of GST)
Above Rs. 5,000 up to Rs. 10,000
Rs. 50 (inclusive of GST)
Above Rs. 10,000 up to Rs. 1,00,000
Rs. 5 per Rs. 1,000 minimum Rs. 60
Above Rs. 1,00,000
Rs. 4 per Rs. 1,000 minimum Rs. 600, maximum Rs. 2,000
IOI (Inter-Office Instrument) DDs
Same as above
Delivery by courier/post
Rs. 50 plus GST (added to above charges)
DD Amount
What You Pay
Rs. 20,000
Rs. 100 (Rs. 5 x 20 = Rs. 100)
Rs. 50,000
Rs. 250 (Rs. 5 x 50 = Rs. 250)
Rs. 5 lakh
Rs. 2,000 (maximum cap applies)
Rs. 10 lakh
Rs. 1 crore
Once a DD crosses Rs. 1 lakh in value, SBI's fee does not go above Rs. 2,000 regardless of the amount. So a Rs. 5 lakh DD and a Rs. 5 crore DD cost the same to issue.
Lost the DD or need the money back? Cancellation at SBI is only possible at a branch. you cannot do it online. You need to bring the original draft with you.
For account-funded DDs, carry the DD cancellation form along with the original draft. For cash-purchased DDs, bring both the original draft and the receipt from when you bought it.

One thing worth knowing: SBI's refund process depends on you having the original draft. Without it, recovering the money gets complicated and often requires additional documentation and time.
If you still need the payment to go through, you can get the DD revalidated at an SBI branch. The current charge for DD revalidation is Rs. 200 plus GST.
Revalidation cannot be done online. Branch visit is mandatory.
Certain SBI account types receive full or partial waivers on DD charges. If you hold any of the accounts below, check your account terms before paying the standard fee.
Full waivers (no cancellation charges):
If you run a business and are issuing DDs regularly, the Diamond or Platinum variant current account can save a meaningful amount over a year.
SBI lets you request a DD in two ways: at any branch in person, or through SBI Net Banking.
At a branch: Fill out the DD application form, provide the payee's name, the bank where the DD will be deposited, and the amount. Pay by cash (up to Rs. 49,999 as per RBI guidelines) or by debit to your account. The DD is either handed to you at the branch or delivered by courier to your registered address for an additional Rs. 50 plus GST.
Online via SBI Net Banking: Log in to SBI's internet banking portal, go to the Payments section, and select Demand Draft. Enter the payee name, payee bank details, amount, and delivery preference. Note that some account types and transaction limits apply.
Once issued, you receive a reference number and an issuance advice slip. Keep both.
If you are paying for the DD in cash, the maximum you can put on a single demand draft is Rs. 49,999. This is not an SBI rule. it comes from RBI's cash transaction guidelines. For amounts above Rs. 49,999, you need to fund the DD by debiting your bank account.
There is no upper limit on DD amount if you pay from an account.
Validity is 3 months. Do not get a DD too far in advance if the submission date is uncertain. Revalidation is possible but costs money and requires a branch visit.
Cancellation is branch-only. You cannot cancel a DD through Net Banking or the YONO app. Plan accordingly if the transaction falls through.
Original document is non-negotiable. For both cancellation and revalidation, SBI requires the original DD. A photocopy or screenshot will not work.
Cross-check the payee name. Errors on the payee name can complicate encashment. Banks sometimes refuse DDs where the payee name does not exactly match the account name.
IOI DDs carry the same charges. Inter-Office Instrument demand drafts (used for internal SBI transfers) attract the same issuance and cancellation fees as regular DDs.
SBI DD charges start at Rs. 25 for drafts up to Rs. 5,000. For larger amounts, the fee goes up in slabs Rs. 5 per Rs. 1,000 for drafts between Rs. 10,000 and Rs. 1 lakh, and Rs. 4 per Rs. 1,000 above Rs. 1 lakh. The maximum charge is Rs. 2,000 regardless of how large the draft is.
For a Rs. 20,000 DD, the charge is Rs. 5 per Rs. 1,000, which works out to Rs. 100 inclusive of GST.
For Rs. 50,000, the fee is Rs. 5 x 50 = Rs. 250 inclusive of GST.
Any DD above Rs. 1 lakh attracts Rs. 4 per Rs. 1,000, subject to a minimum of Rs. 600 and a maximum of Rs. 2,000. So Rs. 5 lakh, Rs. 10 lakh, or Rs. 1 crore DD all cost Rs. 2,000.
No. SBI does not allow DD cancellation through internet banking or YONO. You must visit the branch with the original DD.
3 months from the date of issue. After that, it expires and needs revalidation (Rs. 200 plus GST) or fresh issuance.
For cash payments, the limit is Rs. 49,999 per RBI rules. For payments debited from your account, there is no upper limit.
Diamond and Platinum Variant Current Account holders get unlimited free DDs. Gold Variant holders get 50 free DDs per month. Shubharambh Startup account holders get 10 free DDs per month. Salary Package and Shaurya Family Pension accounts get full waivers on cancellation charges.
