How to Pay MV Tax Online in India: Vahan Steps, Tax Due Check and Receipt
You can pay MV tax online on the Vahan citizen services portal of Parivahan Sewa: enter the registration number, the last five digits of the chassis number, confirm an OTP, review the fee panel and pay through the gateway. The catch is that the option works only where your state transport department has switched it on for your RTO. Where it hasn't, the state's own transport portal or the RTO counter is the route.
That covers most people. The rest of this guide deals with what the portal doesn't explain: whether you owe anything at all, how to read your tax status before paying, what to do when a payment hangs, and how commercial, other-state and BH-series vehicles differ.
Key takeaways
-
MV tax (road tax) is a state levy, so the amount, the payment period and the online facility all depend on your state and RTO.
-
The official route is
vahan.parivahan.gov.in: registration number, last 5 chassis digits, OTP, fee panel, payment, receipt.
-
Most private vehicles pay once at registration. Later payments come from triggers such as RC renewal, a permanent move to another state, or old arrears.
-
Commercial vehicles pay on a cycle, so a missed period turns into arrears that show up on the next fee panel.
-
Pay only on
.gov.in pages you typed in yourself. Fake e-challan and Parivahan look-alikes are common.
Do you owe motor vehicle tax right now?
Motor vehicle tax, which most people call road tax, is collected by the states. Parivahan's own FAQ explains why bills differ from one state to another: each state has its own motor vehicle act, and the tax is decided under it. Wikipedia's entry on road tax lists the usual inputs: engine capacity, seating capacity, unladen weight and cost price, with each state applying its own rules.
Whether a payment is due depends on the kind of vehicle and what has happened to it.
|
Your vehicle |
When tax is usually due |
Where you pay |
|
New private car or bike |
At registration. Many states take one lump sum covering a fixed term, often 15 years |
Dealer or RTO, as part of registration |
|
Private vehicle already registered |
Only on a trigger: RC renewal, permanent move to another state, change of vehicle class, or earlier unpaid tax |
Vahan where enabled, otherwise state portal or RTO |
|
Commercial goods or passenger vehicle |
On a cycle set by the state, vehicle class and permit |
Vahan or state portal |
|
BH-series vehicle |
Every two years or in multiples of two |
Vahan |
|
Vehicle from another state operating in this one |
Other-state (checkpost) tax |
Parivahan Checkpost service |
|
Any vehicle with arrears |
Whenever the fee panel shows an amount |
Vahan, state portal or RTO |
Two payments get confused with MV tax. A toll is charged per use of a tolled road, and an e-challan is a traffic fine. Paying either one does nothing for your MV tax, and the reverse is also true.
How to check vehicle tax status and dues before paying
There is no single national due date for motor vehicle tax. The date comes from your state's rules and, for commercial vehicles, from the period you last paid up to. So the useful question is "paid up to when?" rather than "when is it due?"
Two places answer it.
Know Your Vehicle Details. On Parivahan Sewa, open Informational Services, choose Know Your Vehicle Details and enter the registration number. The record shows the tax payment and its validity alongside other vehicle details. Owner information is partly masked, since only limited data is public.
The fee panel. Start the Pay Vehicle Tax flow described below and stop at the Fee Panel. It shows the vehicle class, tax period, any arrears and the amount, before you pay anything. If your state has not enabled online payment, you will find that out at this stage too.
Treat a status lookup as a pointer, not proof. A payment made this week can take a while to show, and the receipt is the document that settles an argument at a checkpost or an RTO counter.
How to pay motor vehicle tax online on Vahan, step by step
These steps follow the flow in Parivahan's FAQ for paying vehicle tax. Have the RC in hand, because the chassis number is printed on it.
-
Open the Vahan citizen services page by typing
vahan.parivahan.gov.in/vahanservice/vahan/ into your browser. Do not tap a link from a message.
-
Enter the vehicle registration number and click Proceed.
-
Click Online Services and select Pay Vehicle Tax. Some states word this slightly differently, such as Pay MV Tax or Tax Payment.
-
Enter the last 5 digits of the chassis number and click Validate Regn_no/Chasi_no.
-
Click Generate OTP.
-
Enter the OTP you receive and submit.
-
Update the insurance details when asked.
-
Review the Fee Panel: vehicle class, tax period, arrears, amount.
-
Proceed and pay using the options the gateway offers.
-
Download the receipt once it is generated and note the application number.
On the OTP: the steps refer to the registered mobile number, but another line in the same FAQ says a citizen can enter any mobile number for the tax payment and confirm it with an OTP. Try the registered number first. If the OTP never arrives, retry after a short wait and report it to the Vahan helpdesk rather than paying through an agent.
Parivahan's FAQ also notes that after the payment step the application moves to the RTO for further processing. Keep the application number until the record updates.
What to do when Pay Vehicle Tax doesn't work
Most failures have a known cause. The alerts below come from Parivahan's FAQ.
|
What you see |
What it means |
What to do |
|
"This service has not been activated for the concerned State/RTO" |
Online tax payment is available only at selected states and RTOs, as permitted by the state transport department |
Check the state transport department's portal, confirm you chose the right state and RTO, or pay at the RTO |
|
"Vehicle is blacklisted" |
No Vahan service, including tax, is available for a blacklisted vehicle |
Contact the department that blacklisted it, get it cleared, then retry |
|
Transaction shows pending |
An earlier transaction for the same vehicle is unfinished, and a new one cannot start until it settles |
Vahan, then Status, then Check Pending Transaction. Enter registration number, last 5 chassis digits or transaction number, click Show Details, then click the transaction number to clear it |
|
Amount debited but payment shows failed |
The bank side may still be reconciling |
Wait, keep checking Check Pending Transaction, and do not pay a second time |
|
Blank page after clicking pay |
A temporary portal or gateway problem |
Retry later. If it continues, report it to the Vahan helpdesk |
Paying twice is the mistake that costs the most, because a duplicate transaction has to be sorted out afterwards. Check the status first.
How to download or reprint your MV tax receipt
If you closed the page before saving the receipt, the FAQ's reprint route is:
-
On the Vahan page, click Status and select Reprint Receipt/forms.
-
Select the application type and transaction.
-
Enter the registration number and the last 5 digits of the chassis number.
-
Click Show Details.
-
Click the transaction number and print or save the receipt.
Keep the PDF with your RC copy and, for a business vehicle, with your accounting records. The receipt shows the vehicle, the period covered and the amount, which is what an officer or a buyer will ask for.
Commercial vehicle MV tax: monthly, quarterly and yearly payments
Commercial vehicle owners pay on a cycle instead of once. Depending on the state, vehicle class, permit type and weight or seating capacity, the fee panel offers the tax modes that state allows, such as monthly, quarterly, half-yearly or yearly. You choose the period, pay, and the tax runs to the end of that period. The next payment is due when it lapses.
The risk is arrears. A missed period does not disappear; it shows up on the next fee panel, and depending on the state, unpaid tax can hold up other work on that vehicle such as permit or fitness services. Set a calendar reminder for the day each period ends rather than relying on a reminder from the portal.
If the vehicle runs as a business, the tax is a recurring cost worth recording properly. Receipts belong in your books, and accounting and bookkeeping is where they get matched to expenses, while business tax filing is where those expenses reach your return. Small operators who run as an owner-driver sometimes start as a proprietorship firm and later look at MSME registration. Whether GST registration applies to a transport business depends on turnover and the kind of service, so confirm that separately. Periodic tax also sits beside loan repayments in the monthly cash flow, and an EMI calculator helps you see the two together. MV tax itself is a state levy paid on the Parivahan portal; it is not something to pay through a consultant.
Paying road tax for a vehicle from another state
Three separate things get lumped together here.
Permanent move. When you shift to another state for good, the usual process has three parts: a no-objection certificate from the old state, a new registration mark in the new state, and a claim for a pro rata road tax refund from the old state. The Press Information Bureau describes the refund step as cumbersome and different from state to state. Under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, a vehicle kept in another state generally needs a new registration mark after 12 months, but the new state's tax liability can start earlier than that, so ask the destination RTO.
Temporary operation. A vehicle registered in one state and operating in another may owe other-state tax, often called checkpost or border tax. Parivahan runs an online Checkpost service for this: you select the state, enter the vehicle details, the system calculates the tax, and you pay online. The National Portal of India lists it as Online Checkpost Tax Payment of Vehicles. Keep the receipt with the vehicle, because enforcement teams may ask for it.
Home-state tax. Checkpost tax does not replace the tax paid in the state of registration. They are separate.
BH-series vehicles: MV tax in two-year blocks
The Bharat (BH) series was introduced by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways through GSR 594(E) dated 26 August 2021, effective 15 September 2021. Its point is to let eligible owners, such as central and state government employees, public sector staff and employees of private companies with offices in four or more states or union territories, keep one registration mark when they relocate.
The tax works differently from a regular registration. According to the PIB, the owner pays MV tax for two years or in multiples of two years, at a rate 25% higher than the regular one, and the money is passed to the states online. After the fourteenth year the tax is levied annually. A December 2022 amendment also lets owners of regular-series vehicles convert to the BH series on payment of the requisite tax, if they later become eligible.
What decides the amount, and why there is no rate table here
We have not put a state-wise road tax table in this article on purpose. Rates are set by each state, differ by vehicle class and age, and get revised. A table copied today can be wrong for your RTO tomorrow, and a wrong number is worse than none.
The reliable figure is the one on the Vahan fee panel, because it is calculated from your vehicle's own record and your state's rules. Third-party road tax calculators and MV tax calculators are fine for a rough estimate before you buy a vehicle, but they are estimates.
Search results are also full of specific "grace period" and "late penalty" figures. We could not trace a single national grace period or fixed penalty to a government source. Penalties and interest are set state by state, so read your state transport department's notification or ask the RTO.
Stay on official domains when you pay
Vehicle-tax and challan scams are common enough that police in several states have issued warnings about fake e-challan messages and malicious APK files sent over WhatsApp and SMS. A few habits close most of the gaps:
-
Type
parivahan.gov.in or the state transport portal address yourself. Genuine government portals end in .gov.in.
-
Never install an APK sent as an e-challan, RTO or "vehicle verification" file. Parivahan services run on the website and the app-store apps.
-
A page that asks only for card details and nothing about the vehicle is a red flag. For fines, the official e-challan site is
echallan.parivahan.gov.in.
-
Never share an OTP, UPI PIN or card PIN with anyone offering to "clear" the tax for you.
Many pages that rank for this topic, including this one, are private websites. LegalDev is a private consultancy, not a government portal. Use guides to understand the process, and make the payment itself only on Vahan or your state transport portal.
Frequently asked questions about paying MV tax online
Can I pay MV tax online in every state?
No. Parivahan's FAQ says the online tax payment facility is available only at selected states and RTOs, as permitted by the state transport department. If the alert says the service is not activated, use your state's transport portal or the RTO.
Do I have to pay road tax every year on a private car or bike?
Usually not. Many states collect one lump sum at registration for a fixed term, often 15 years. Further payment can fall due at RC renewal, after a permanent move to another state, on a change of vehicle class, or where earlier tax is unpaid. The exact rule depends on your state.
How do I check whether my vehicle tax is paid?
Use Know Your Vehicle Details on Parivahan Sewa to see the tax payment and validity, or start the Pay Vehicle Tax flow and read the fee panel, which lists the tax period, arrears and amount. For proof, rely on the payment receipt rather than a status lookup.
What do I need to pay vehicle tax online?
The registration number, the last five digits of the chassis number (printed on the RC), a mobile number that can receive an OTP, the insurance details the portal asks for, and a payment method supported by the gateway.
Which mobile number receives the OTP?
The step list refers to the registered mobile number. A separate line in Parivahan's FAQ says any mobile number can be entered for the tax payment and confirmed by OTP. Try the registered number first, and report repeated OTP failures to the Vahan helpdesk.
My money was debited but the payment shows failed. What now?
Do not pay again. Parivahan's FAQ says the bank may still be reconciling, so keep checking the transaction under Status, Check Pending Transaction. If it stays unresolved, contact the Vahan helpdesk with the transaction details.
Why does the portal say a transaction is pending?
An earlier transaction for the same vehicle has not finished, and a new one cannot start until it settles. Open Status, then Check Pending Transaction, enter the registration number, last five chassis digits or transaction number, and clear it from the transaction number link.
What does "Vehicle is blacklisted" mean?
Vahan services, including tax payment, are not available for a blacklisted vehicle. You need to contact the department that placed the vehicle on the list, have it removed, and then retry.
How do I download my MV tax receipt again?
On the Vahan page click Status, select Reprint Receipt/forms, choose the application type and transaction, enter the registration number and last five chassis digits, click Show Details and then the transaction number.
Is there a grace period or a fixed late penalty for MV tax?
Not one that applies nationally, as far as we could verify. Penalties and interest are state rules and can vary by vehicle class and the length of delay. Check your state transport department's notification or ask the RTO.
How often do commercial vehicles pay MV tax?
On a cycle set by the state, vehicle class, permit type and weight or seating capacity. The fee panel offers the tax modes your state allows, such as monthly, quarterly, half-yearly or yearly. Missed periods become arrears.
Do I pay road tax again if I move to another state?
Possibly. The new state can levy its own tax, and a vehicle generally needs a new registration mark after 12 months in another state. Owners normally get an NOC from the old state, register in the new one and then claim a pro rata refund from the old state, a process that varies by state.
What is checkpost tax?
It is the other-state tax charged when a vehicle registered elsewhere operates in a state. Parivahan's Checkpost service calculates it from the vehicle details and takes payment online. It is separate from the home-state MV tax.
How is MV tax paid on a BH-series vehicle?
For two years or in multiples of two years, at a rate 25% higher than the regular one, according to the PIB. After the fourteenth year it is charged annually. The payment is made online and passed on to the states.
Can I pay vehicle tax using only the chassis number?
In the standard Vahan flow you start with the registration number, and the last five digits of the chassis number act as a check. A vehicle that has not been registered yet is taxed by the dealer and RTO as part of registration.
How do I avoid fake road tax payment sites?
Type the address yourself, look for .gov.in, ignore messages that push an APK or a payment link, and never share an OTP or PIN. Check the vehicle's status on Vahan before paying anyone.
