GSTR-3B Filing Guide 2026: Format, Due Dates, Online Filing Process & Download
GSTR-3B is the self-declared summary return that every regular GST-registered business in India files to report total sales, input tax credit claimed, and net GST liability for a tax period. Unlike an invoice-level return, it only asks for consolidated totals, and it is the return through which tax actually gets paid to the government. If you are registered under GST, filing GSTR-3B is not optional, it applies even in a month with zero business activity.
This guide covers what GSTR-3B is, who must file it, the current 2026 due dates for monthly and QRMP filers, the exact format of the form table by table, the step-by-step filing process, late fees, and how to download a filed GSTR-3B from the GST portal in PDF or Excel.
GSTR-3B Meaning: What Is Form GSTR-3B?
Form GSTR-3B is a simplified summary return under Section 39 of the CGST Act. It captures consolidated figures rather than invoice-by-invoice detail: outward taxable supplies, supplies under reverse charge, exempt and nil-rated supplies, eligible input tax credit, and the net tax you owe after adjusting ITC against your liability.
The 3B in GSTR-3B does not stand for anything beyond being the third form in the original GST return-filing scheme that survived as the primary monthly compliance document. GST3B, 3B GST, GST 3B return, GST form 3b: these are all the same return, just written differently depending on how people search for it.
Because GSTR-3B only asks for totals, it is faster to prepare than GSTR-1, but it still needs to match your books and reconcile against GSTR-1 and GSTR-2B, or you risk a mismatch notice later.
Who Needs to File GSTR-3B?
Every regular taxpayer registered under GST has to file GSTR-3B, whether monthly or quarterly, and a Nil return is compulsory even with no transactions in a period. The main taxpayers who file a different form instead are composition scheme dealers, who file CMP-08 and GSTR-4 rather than GSTR-3B.
Casual and non-resident taxable persons, Input Service Distributors, and TDS/TCS deductors also follow separate return schedules, but for a standard regular taxpayer, GSTR-3B filing is a fixed monthly or quarterly obligation with no exceptions for low turnover or a quiet month.
GSTR-3B Due Date 2026: Monthly and QRMP Filers
Your GSTR-3B due date depends on your aggregate annual turnover and whether you have opted into the QRMP scheme.

If your aggregate annual turnover is above ₹5 crore, you file monthly, and the return for a given month is due on the 20th of the next month. A May 2026 return, for example, is due on 20 June 2026.
QRMP is available to businesses with turnover up to ₹5 crore. Under this scheme, GSTR-3B is filed quarterly, but tax still has to be paid every month using Form PMT-06, generally by the 25th of the following month. Which of the two quarterly due dates applies to you, the 22nd or the 24th, depends on the state or union territory where your principal place of business is registered, not on your turnover slab within that ₹5 crore limit.
Standard due dates get pushed occasionally through CBIC notifications. For instance, the March 2026 GSTR-3B deadline moved from 20 April 2026 to 21 April 2026 through a specific notification. Treat the dates above as the general rule and confirm the exact date for your GSTIN on the GST portal close to filing time, especially around year-end or during any announced GST 2.0 transition period.
Format of GSTR-3B: Table-by-Table Breakdown
The GSTR-3B form is organized into sections, each covering a specific part of your tax position for the period. Here is what each one asks for:
-
Table 3.1, outward supplies and reverse charge: taxable outward supplies excluding zero-rated, zero-rated supplies such as exports, nil-rated and exempt supplies, non-GST outward supplies, and inward supplies liable to reverse charge
-
Table 3.1.1, e-commerce supplies: liability under Section 9(5), reported separately from your own outward supplies
-
Table 3.2, inter-state supplies: a breakup of inter-state supplies made to unregistered persons, composition taxpayers, and UIN holders such as embassies and UN bodies
-
Table 4, eligible ITC: input tax credit available on imports, inward supplies, ISD credit, and reverse-charge ITC, along with ITC reversed or blocked under Rule 42/43
-
Table 5, exempt, nil-rated and non-GST inward supplies
-
Table 5.1, interest and late fee: for the previous tax period, where applicable
-
Table 6.1, payment of tax: how the tax liability is discharged, split between ITC utilised and cash paid, along with the final cash and credit ledger position
One change worth knowing if you are filing now: from the July 2025 tax period onward, the government hard-locked the auto-populated liability figures in GSTR-3B. Since the November 2025 period, the values that flow into Table 3.2 from GSTR-1, GSTR-1A, or IFF for inter-state supplies to unregistered persons, composition taxpayers, and UIN holders are no longer editable inside GSTR-3B itself. If those numbers are wrong, the fix has to happen upstream, through an amendment in GSTR-1A or in the following period's GSTR-1/IFF, not by typing a different figure directly into GSTR-3B.
GSTR-3B Form PDF and Excel Format
The GST portal itself only issues a filed GSTR-3B as a PDF, watermarked "Final GSTR-3B" once submitted. There is no native option to download a filed return directly in Excel or CSV from the portal. If you need the GSTR-3B in Excel, either use the GST offline utility to prepare the return before filing, or run the filed PDF through a PDF-to-Excel conversion step afterward for reconciliation and record-keeping. Several GST software tools and free converters can pull Table 3.1, Table 4, and Table 5 figures out of a filed PDF into a structured spreadsheet, though Table 3.2 and Table 5.1 often need to be checked manually against the original PDF since some tools don't extract them.
How to File GSTR-3B on the GST Portal: Step-by-Step
-
Log in to the GST portal at gst.gov.in with your GSTIN, username, and password.
-
Go to Services, then Returns, then Returns Dashboard. Select the financial year and the return period you're filing for.
-
Select GSTR-3B for that period and click Prepare Online, or use the offline utility if you prefer to work outside the portal first.
-
Fill in Table 3.1 and 3.1.1 with your outward taxable supplies, zero-rated supplies, nil-rated and exempt supplies, and reverse-charge inward supplies. Check the auto-populated Table 3.2 figures pulled from GSTR-1/IFF; remember these are locked from the July 2025 period onward.
-
Enter eligible ITC in Table 4, cross-checking against your GSTR-2B for the period so you are not claiming credit that isn't reflected there.
-
Review Table 5 for exempt and non-GST inward supplies, and Table 5.1 if there's interest or late fee carried from the previous period.
-
Check the tax payment summary in Table 6.1. The system shows how much of your liability is covered by available ITC and how much needs to be paid in cash.
-
Make the payment, if any cash liability remains, through the electronic cash ledger.
-
Submit and file using a Digital Signature Certificate or an EVC OTP sent to your registered mobile number.
-
Note the ARN generated on successful filing. It is emailed and texted to you as confirmation.
Once filed, GSTR-3B cannot be revised. Any correction has to be carried into the next period's return as an adjustment entry, not fixed retroactively in the same form.
How to Download GSTR-3B from the GST Portal
To download a GSTR-3B you have already filed, whether you need it for an audit, a loan application, or simple record-keeping:
-
Log in to the GST portal with your credentials.
-
Go to Services, then Returns, then Returns Dashboard.
-
Select the financial year and the specific period you need.
-
Once the status shows "Filed," click View, then Download.
-
The portal generates a PDF marked "Final GSTR-3B" as your official filed record.
If you are downloading immediately after filing, there's a shortcut: the "Download Filed GSTR-3B" button appears right on the filing confirmation page, so you don't need to navigate back through the dashboard separately.
Keep in mind the portal does not offer a single consolidated annual GSTR-3B download. To build a yearly summary, you need to download each month's or quarter's filed return individually and compile the figures yourself, typically in a spreadsheet.
GSTR-3B Late Fee and Interest
The GST portal does not let you submit GSTR-3B without clearing any applicable late fee first, and the fee builds up daily from the day after the due date.
|

|
Late Fee per Day
|
Maximum Late Fee
|
|

|

|
|

|
₹20/day (₹10 CGST + ₹10 SGST)
|
₹500
|
Separate from the late fee, interest at 18% per annum applies to any unpaid tax, calculated from the day after the due date until the date you actually pay. Filing the return late and paying the tax late are two different triggers, and both can apply together: a delayed nil return only attracts the late fee, since there is no tax involved, while a delayed regular return with unpaid liability attracts both the late fee and interest on the outstanding amount.
GSTR-3B vs GSTR-1: What's the Difference?
GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B are filed close together every cycle but serve different purposes, and this is one of the most searched comparisons for anyone new to GST compliance.

In short, GSTR-1 tells the system and your buyers exactly what you sold, invoice by invoice, so their input tax credit can be matched correctly. GSTR-3B is where you actually settle your tax bill for the period based on a summary of both outward and inward supplies. The government cross-checks the two returns, and a persistent mismatch between GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B is one of the more common reasons a business receives a GST notice or gets its ITC questioned.
Common Mistakes While Filing GSTR-3B
-
Skipping the nil filing in a quiet month. The return is still mandatory, and the late fee applies from day one of the delay.
-
Claiming ITC that isn't in GSTR-2B. Since input tax credit can only be availed once it reflects in your GSTR-2B, claiming more than what's shown there invites a reversal and interest later.
-
Manually overriding Table 3.2 figures, which no longer works from the July 2025 period onward. The fix belongs in GSTR-1A or the next GSTR-1/IFF cycle.
-
Filing GSTR-3B before reconciling against GSTR-1. A mismatch caught after both returns are filed is harder and slower to correct than one caught before submission.
-
Forgetting Table 5.1 when there's interest or late fee owed from a previous period, which then carries forward as a discrepancy.
-
Assuming Excel download is available on the portal. It isn't; only a PDF of the filed return is issued natively.
Frequently Asked Questions on GSTR-3B
1. What is GSTR-3B in simple terms?
GSTR-3B is the monthly or quarterly summary return where a GST-registered business reports total sales, input tax credit claimed, and net tax payable, and where the actual tax payment happens.
2. What is the due date for GSTR-3B return in 2026?
Monthly filers must file by the 20th of the following month. QRMP quarterly filers file by the 22nd or 24th of the month after the quarter, depending on their state category.
3. Is GSTR-3B mandatory even with no sales?
Yes. A Nil GSTR-3B return must be filed even when there is no business activity in the period, and the late fee applies to nil returns filed after the due date too.
4. Can GSTR-3B be revised once filed?
No. Once submitted, GSTR-3B cannot be revised for the same period. Corrections are carried into the next period's return as adjustment entries.
5. How do I download GSTR-3B from the GST portal?
Log in, go to Services, then Returns, then Returns Dashboard, select the period, and click View followed by Download once the status shows Filed. The portal issues it as a watermarked PDF.
6. Is GSTR-3B available for download in Excel format?
Not natively. The portal only provides a filed GSTR-3B as a PDF. To get it in Excel, use the GST offline utility before filing or convert the filed PDF afterward with a reconciliation tool.
7. What is the difference between GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B?
GSTR-1 reports invoice-level outward supply details with no tax payment involved. GSTR-3B is a summary return where net tax liability is actually paid, and it is filed after GSTR-1.
8. What is the late fee for late filing of GSTR-3B?
₹50 per day (₹25 CGST plus ₹25 SGST) for regular returns, capped at ₹5,000. For nil returns, it is ₹20 per day, capped at ₹500. Interest at 18% per annum applies separately on unpaid tax.
9. What is the format of GSTR-3B?
The form covers outward supplies and reverse charge (Table 3.1), e-commerce liability under Section 9(5) (Table 3.1.1), inter-state supply breakup (Table 3.2), eligible ITC (Table 4), exempt inward supplies (Table 5), interest and late fee (Table 5.1), and tax payment details (Table 6.1).
10. Who is required to file GSTR-3B?
Every regular GST-registered taxpayer, monthly or under QRMP. Composition dealers file CMP-08 and GSTR-4 instead, and a few other registration categories follow their own separate return schedules.
11. What is the QRMP scheme in relation to GSTR-3B?
QRMP lets businesses with turnover up to ₹5 crore file GSTR-3B once a quarter instead of monthly, while still paying tax every month through Form PMT-06.
12. Can I claim ITC in GSTR-3B that isn't showing in GSTR-2B?
No, not reliably. ITC eligibility is tied to what appears in your GSTR-2B for the period; claiming beyond that figure risks a reversal along with interest later.
13. What happened to Table 3.2 of GSTR-3B from 2025 onward?
From the November 2025 tax period, auto-populated values in Table 3.2 (inter-state supplies to unregistered persons, composition taxpayers, and UIN holders) became non-editable inside GSTR-3B. Corrections now have to go through GSTR-1A or a later GSTR-1/IFF filing.
14. Does GSTR-3B need to be filed before or after GSTR-1?
GSTR-1 is filed first since GSTR-3B relies on the auto-populated data it feeds into Table 3.2 and related ITC figures. Filing GSTR-3B before reconciling against GSTR-1 increases the risk of a mismatch.
15. Where can I download the GSTR-3B offline utility?
On the GST portal under Downloads, then Offline Tools, where you'll find the GSTR-3B Offline Utility as a downloadable ZIP file containing an Excel-based tool for preparing the return before filing.
16. Can I download a consolidated annual GSTR-3B report from the portal?
No, the portal doesn't offer a single annual download. You need to download each month's or quarter's filed return separately and compile the figures yourself.
17. What happens if I don't file GSTR-3B for several months?
The late fee keeps accumulating up to the cap per return, interest continues on any unpaid tax, and prolonged non-filing can block your ability to file subsequent returns or affect your GST registration status.
