A UAN is a unique ID assigned to every employee covered under EPF. It stays connected to all your PF accounts across different jobs, making fund transfers, withdrawals, and overall account management much simpler. Once it's linked to your Aadhaar, PAN, and bank details, the UAN brings transparency and speed to every EPF-related service you access through the UAN portal.
EPFO — the Employees' Provident Fund Organization — issues every employee a 12-digit unique ID called the UAN, which is verified by the Ministry of Labour. What makes it special is that this number never changes, no matter how many times you switch jobs during your working life.
UAN Full Form
UAN stands for Universal Account Number.
Every time you move to a new job, EPFO creates a fresh member ID — a new EPF account — and ties it to your existing UAN. That's worth noting because it's what keeps the whole system clean.
Here's a look at the key features the UAN offers and why they matter:
Feature
What It Does
Single Identity
One permanent ID that follows you through your entire career — no resets.
Monitoring Job Changes
All PF accounts from different employers link under one UAN, letting EPFO track job changes smoothly.
Online Services
You get access to services like UAN card download, PF passbook viewing, personal info updates, and KYC management.
Online Access
Passbook downloads, claim submissions, and KYC updates — all available digitally.
Transparency
Employees can track exactly what their employer is contributing to the PF account.
Simplified Procedure
PF transfers and withdrawals are processed online with real-time tracking, cutting out unnecessary back-and-forth.
Less Employer Dependency
You don't have to chase your HR for basic PF services anymore.
Nomination
An e-nomination facility is available online for hassle-free fund settlement.
Lost track of your UAN? There are a few straightforward ways to locate it.
Method
How It Works
Through Your Employer
Your employer or HR team can share your UAN and member ID directly. Keep in mind that only PF-registered employers can enroll you under EPF and issue a UAN in the first place.
Through Your Salary Slip
Most employers print the UAN on the monthly salary slip. Pull out a recent one issued by your company and look for it there.
Through the UAN Portal
Head to the UAN portal and use the 'Know Your UAN' tab. You can look it up using your PF number or member ID.
Documents You'll Need
Before you start, make sure you have your Universal Account Number or PF member ID ready. Then follow these steps on the EPFO portal:
Step 1: Open the UAN portal and select 'Activate UAN' from the 'Important Links' section.
Step 2: Choose the UAN option, then fill in your UAN, Aadhaar number, name, date of birth, mobile number, and captcha code. Check the consent box and hit 'Get Authorisation Pin'.
Step 3: A new screen will load showing all the details you've entered. Go through them carefully and confirm everything looks right.
Step 4: Tick the 'I Agree' checkbox, enter the four-digit OTP you receive, and click 'Validate OTP and Activate UAN'.
Step 5: Once the OTP is verified, your UAN is officially activated.
Right after activation, a login password will be sent to your registered mobile number.
Seeding your Aadhaar with your EPF account speeds up withdrawals and transfers — and that matters a lot if you ever need quick access to your funds. The good news is that employees can now complete Aadhaar seeding directly on the UAN portal. If both your Aadhaar and UAN are already verified, you don't need employer approval to do this.
Step 1: Log in to the EPFO portal using your UAN, password, and captcha.
Step 2: Go to the 'Manage' tab in the top navigation bar and click on 'KYC'.
Step 3: Tick the box next to Aadhaar, enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number along with your name, and save the details.
Step 4: Once submitted, your details will appear under 'Pending KYC'. After your employer approves them — which typically takes around 15 days — they'll shift to the 'Approved KYC' tab.
So how do you actually check your PF balance? There are multiple routes, whether or not you have your UAN handy.
Every regional PF office has its own customer care number depending on your location. For anything related to UAN or KYC services specifically, you can call 1800118005.

Yes, it is. Without an active UAN, online claim submissions simply aren't possible.
Yes, the UAN is linked to PAN as part of the KYC process.
Your UAN is a permanent 12-digit ID that covers all your EPF member IDs across every job — it stays the same for life. A PF number, on the other hand, is specific to your EPF transactions with one particular employer and is needed for EPF withdrawals.
Visit the EPF portal and click 'Services', then 'For Employees'. Under the 'Services' section, choose 'Member Passbook'. Log in with your UAN, password, and captcha. Select 'Passbook', pick your Member ID, and your PF balance will show up on screen.
Nothing changes. You cannot hold two UANs — it's a one-time permanent number. When joining a new employer, you declare your existing UAN in Form-11 (Declaration Form). Your new employer then opens a fresh EPF account and links it to the same UAN you've always had.
Yes. Every contributory member of EPFO — including contract-based employees — is eligible for and will be allotted a UAN.
Absolutely. Log in to the UAN portal with your credentials, go to the 'View' tab, select 'UAN Card', and click 'Download' to get a PDF copy.
