You filed your income tax return. Hit submit. Felt good about it. And then... did nothing else. Sound familiar? Here's the thing — filing your ITR without verifying it is like submitting an exam paper without signing your name. The income tax department treats it as if you never filed at all.
That one-step gap is exactly what the ITR-V form is for.
ITR-V stands for Income Tax Return — Verification. It's a single-page document that confirms the data you uploaded online is correct and that you're taking responsibility for it. No verification = no valid return. Simple as that.
When you e-file your return without a Digital Signature Certificate (DSC), the department has no way to confirm it's actually you. Anyone could technically upload a return using your PAN. ITR-V is the department's way of saying — prove it.
It was introduced because India's tax filing went digital faster than most people's Aadhaar got linked to their phones. Millions of taxpayers were filing online but had no DSC and couldn't e-verify either. So the physical ITR-V — sign it, post it, done — became the fallback.
And it still works the same way today.
The income tax department gives you two broad routes for verification after e-filing:
Route 1 — Digital Signature (DSC): If you have a valid DSC, your return is verified the moment you upload it. No ITR-V needed.
Route 2 — E-Verification: You can verify instantly using Aadhaar OTP, net banking, bank EVC (Electronic Verification Code), or Demat account. Again — no physical ITR-V required.
But what if neither works for you? That's when the ITR-V form enters the picture. You'll need it specifically when:
Here's a question worth asking yourself right now: is your Aadhaar-linked mobile number still active? Because if it isn't, the OTP route won't work — and this depends on how your Aadhaar is set up, not just your phone number.
People who typically don't need ITR-V:
People who usually do need ITR-V:
It's not a complex or uncommon document. Roughly 93.56% of e-verified ITRs in AY 2024-25 used Aadhaar OTP — which means the remaining 6%+ used either EVC, DSC, or the physical ITR-V route. That's still millions of taxpayers using this form every year.
This is the part people miss most often. You've probably noticed the old "120 days" rule being mentioned online — that changed back in August 2022.
As per CBDT Notification No. 2/2024 (effective 1st April 2024), the current rule is:
You must e-verify or submit your signed ITR-V to CPC Bengaluru within 30 days of uploading your return.
That's it. 30 days. Not 90. Not 120.
What happens if you verify within 30 days? The original filing date is counted as your return date — which matters for refunds and penalty calculation.
What if you miss the 30 days? Your return date shifts to the date of late verification, and you could face late filing consequences under the Act. Miss it entirely with no condonation request? The return is treated as if it was never filed. No refund. No carry-forward of losses. Possible penalty notice.
But wait — there's a nuance. For speed post, the date that counts is when CPC receives your ITR-V, not when you post it. So if you're sending physically, don't wait until day 28.
If you're going the physical route, here's exactly what to do:
Step 1 — Download from the portal Log in to incometax.gov.in → e-File → Income Tax Returns → View Filed Returns → Download Form. The PDF is password-protected. Your password is your PAN number in lowercase + date of birth in DDMMYYYY format. (Example: abcde1234f01011990)
Step 2 — Print and sign Take a clear black-and-white printout on A4 paper. Sign inside the box using blue ink only. Don't use black. Don't sign outside the box. Don't staple anything to it.
Step 3 — Post it correctly Only Ordinary Post or Speed Post is accepted. Courier is rejected outright — the CPC won't even open it.
Step 4 — Send it here
Centralised Processing Centre, Income Tax Department, Bengaluru, Karnataka — 560500
Keep your speed post receipt. It's your only proof of dispatch.
And yes, rejection happens. Don't panic if it does.
Common reasons ITR-V gets rejected: missing signature, signature in black ink instead of blue, poor print quality, or the 30-day window has passed. If you get a rejection notice, check your registered email — the CPC sends a message explaining why.
If the 30-day window hasn't passed yet, take a fresh printout, sign again in blue, and resend. If it has passed, you may need to file a revised return or submit a condonation of delay request on the portal. This isn't the end of the world — it's just extra paperwork.
ITR-V looks like nothing. One page, a box, a signature. But it's the difference between a valid return and a wasted year of tax filing.
If you can e-verify — do it. Aadhaar OTP takes under two minutes. There's no envelope, no post office trip, no waiting to know if it arrived. But if you can't e-verify, don't ignore the physical route. Just don't delay it.
And remember — without verification, your return won't get processed. Your refund won't come. And if a notice lands, you won't have a leg to stand on.
Thirty days goes faster than you think.
Q1. What happens if I don't submit ITR-V within 30 days?
Not good, honestly. Your return gets treated as if you never filed it — no processed status, no refund, and all late filing consequences under the Income Tax Act kick in. You can apply for a condonation of delay on the portal, but that's not guaranteed to be approved. As of CBDT Notification No. 2/2024, the 30-day rule has been firm since April 2024. Don't rely on the old 120-day window — it doesn't apply anymore.
Q2. Can I send ITR-V by courier to Bengaluru CPC?
Nope. Courier is specifically rejected. Only Ordinary Post or Speed Post reaches CPC. If you use a courier service, your ITR-V won't be processed and your return stays unverified. This catches a lot of people off guard — even reputed courier companies won't work here. Stick to India Post.
Q3. Is verifying my ITR mandatory after filing?
100% yes, and there's no grey area on this. Filing and verifying are two separate steps. About 6.21 crore ITRs were e-verified in AY 2024-25 — because every single one of them had to be. An unverified ITR simply doesn't exist in the department's records. It's not optional, and no one gets a pass.
Q4. How will I know my ITR-V actually reached CPC?
You'll get a confirmation message on your registered mobile and email once CPC receives and processes your form. You can also check your ITR status on the income tax portal — look for "Successfully Verified" status under View Filed Returns. If the status still says "Submitted and Pending for e-Verification," it hasn't been received yet.
Q5. My ITR-V got rejected — can I resend it?
Yes, as long as you're still within the 30-day window from your original filing date. Take a fresh printout — don't reuse the old one — sign cleanly in blue ink, and speed post it again. If the 30-day window is already closed, file a revised return on the portal to generate a new ITR-V, then send that within the fresh 30-day period. It's annoying, but fixable.
